Welcome to Great Northern Yarns

Developed in August 2008 by Great Northern Yarns, our exclusive 70% Mink 30% cashmere yarn is among the world’s finest, exotic luxury yarns. It’s important to know the minks are not harmed in any way. Healthy, stress-free minks sheared once a year produce the softest, most lustrous fibers. Finally you can enjoy the luxury of real mink with peace of mind. The ultra soft mink down is wonderfully compatible with cashmere resulting in this extraordinarily soft yarn. The mink yarn is versatile DK weight; the generous 230 yard skeins arrive sealed against the elements in a large in a large zip lock bag, complete with care instructions. This yarn is sold directly to the knitting consumer through this website at real wholesale prices. We are the sole global distributor.

The mink cashmere yarn has many unique properties. Knitting stimulates a blossoming of the mink fibers creating a lovely soft halo.

All of our colored yarns are top dyed. A more expensive but superior method for dying yarn. The fibers are dyed before carding and spinning. Top dyed fibers are softer with richer more consistent color saturation. There is no color variation from dye lot to dye lot. A hang tag with dye lot and care instructions is attached to your yarn.

The minks are sheared once a year in the warm summer months.  The guard hairs and more coarse fibers are removed yielding a treasure of ultra-soft mink down.

A note about mink yarn colors. Accurately displaying yarn colors on any website can be difficult. Depending on the calibration of your monitor the yarn colors can appear a slight shade off from reality. On the Detailed Description page for each mink yarn color, I'm adding the Pantone color reference number from their textile color guide for you to use as a cross reference.  You can order a color card at the flat shipping rate of $4.80 or have one included at no charge along with your yarn order.

As an animal lover one of my goals in developing this yarn was to provide conscientious knitters an alternative to sacrificing minks in order to enjoy the natural beauty and physical properties of the mink's fibers. The mink fibers that we harvest by shearing the minks is more valuable as a renewable resource to the farmer than an individual pelt; we have spared countless minks. I went to China in August 2008 to develop the yarn properly. I formed a partnership with the owner of a cashmere farm in Inner Mongolia. This was extremely expensive, but the right thing to do. Without giving away any trade secrets I can assure you the entire process is quite humane. The minks are sheared once a year in the warm summer months. The shearing process only takes a matter of seconds. It's amazingly quick, zip zip and it's done and the minks are back on their feet running around. The farmer’s livelihood depends on healthy minks, they are treated extremely well.
